You might also want to take a look at some of the opportunistic schedulers
out there that do distributed computing stuff like seti. Opportunistic
schedulers make use of idle cpu cycles like you are referring to below.
Condor comes to mind amoung others to do this sort of thing. You app has
to be a divisable type of work load like chunks of data from seti for this
to work however. Other wise you would need to code your app for cluster
specific libraries like others have referred you to in other previous
"answers"

Mosix is also another avenue to explore.
