Linux Systems Engineer
Job Description

The key skills that he is looking for this role to have are:
1. Strong linux skills
2. Cloud computing experience (Amazon Cloud would be a plus)
3. Strong scripting knowledge (shell, perl, bash, or python)
4. Prior experience in working with API gateways and management solutions would be considered a huge plus.
5. Experience in caching (specifically with Akamai) would be a plus.
6. Puppet Experience strongly desired





SYSTEMS ENGINEER



The Weather Channel is looking for a systems engineer to join a fast paced dynamic environment to build the next generation weather data platform. The systems engineer will be responsible for designing and developing solutions for infrastructure setup, configuration, automation and caching, primarily on the cloud. This requires an excellent understanding of sound application/infrastructure design, networking, application deployment and management, server provisioning and maintenance, and platform automation.

The systems engineer will work closely with data systems engineers/architects, performance/platform engineers and application developers/architects. The systems engineer will be responsible for the full deployment, infrastructure automation, and designing and developing tools and applications for code building, deployment and release management.



Requirements:

*        Strong Linux experience (RedHat 6.x/CentOS 5.x & 6.x)

*        Experience with configuration and management of CDN's (Akamai or level3)

*        Solid understanding of Amazon web services (or other cloud providers) and prior experience in designing and building infrastructure components in Amazon (or other cloud providers)

*        Good working knowledge with scripting languages such as, Perl, Python or PHP

*        Experience with Puppet, and/or MCollective and/or Factor

*          Experience with API management gateways and portals.

*        Experience with Memcached or varnish or squid.

*          Experience with building and deploying applications and release management

*        Apache and Tomcat experience

*           Experience with Jenkins

*          Experience with messaging technologies (RabbitMQ)

*        Experience with NoSQL (Redis, Riak, MongoDB, Hadoop) would be a plus

*        Knowledge of creating RPMs for open source



Qualifications



KNOWLEDGE

1.      BS in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent

2.      5-10 years experience with infrastructure management, linux administration, and networking services

3.      2+ years experience in working in AWS or in other cloud providers.

4.      Experience in managing applications running hot-hot across multiple locations

5.      Experience in using puppet/chef to automate instance creation and configuration

6.      Good understanding of non-relational data stores such as MongoDB, Riak, Redis and MemCached

7.      2+ years experience in high volume public-facing web site/API management environments.

8.      Experience with Jenkins (and/or other similar tools).



SKILLS

1.      Excellent problem solving, with the ability to distill a problem down to one or two key hypotheses and quickly able to validate based on live and experimental data.

2.      Excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to relate with sensitivity to the unique needs and problems of a 24-hour operation with critical deadlines.

3.      Ability to work closely with customers in defining content requirements.

4.      Must be able to manage several active projects simultaneously.

5.      Can work with minimal supervision.

6.      Goal oriented, customer focused, self-starter attitude, not risk adverse

7.      Exceptional interpersonal teamwork skills.

8.      Possess positive and professional communication skills with all levels of stakeholders and management

9.      Dependable, organized, and highly motivated with ability to multi-task
