Hmm, as best I can tell, my sync cron job saw the fullfilelist change
and started syncing before your hardlink run.  The first run of rsync
said:

Number of files transferred: 16945
Total file size: 734502471605 bytes
Total transferred file size: 42053178939 bytes
Literal data: 41969264934 bytes
Matched data: 85541131 bytes
File list size: 24721148
File list generation time: 533.346 seconds
File list transfer time: 0.000 seconds
Total bytes sent: 653341
Total bytes received: 42000056556

Then the next run turned a bunch of stuff under 19-Alpha into links.
