Thank you Microsoft, for updating Windows 10 so it absolutely will not
connect to Samba on our Centos 6 RAID 1 server. (Stuck on Centos 6 due
to no in-place upgrade)
So, we gotta stand up a new server.
I have a Dell Optiplex 740; I was gonna just buy a pair of new 2TB
drives and install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on it.
After much beating of my head against its non EUFI-ness, I have
determined I can get it to boot from a Rufus-built 22.04 USB.
I cannot get it to boot from either a 24.04 CD+RW, or a 24.04 USB.
So, the lack of EUFI on the Optiplex 740 I could ignore.
BUT, aren't there a bajillion OptiPlex 3040, 3050, 5040, 5050
(2015-2017) desktops going to the dump due to windows 11?
Wouldn't it be smarter to find one of those and not have the EUFI
limitation, and start off with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS? I'll probably be
dead, or brain-dead by the time we run out of updates.
Where might one find some of those? Or equivalent? Preferably
in-town?
regards,
Neal
