I certainly wouldn't buy one today if it wasn't GigE, but ... if the switch isn't GigE, that won't matter ... or if it is some other embedded device with 100 base-TX, then you'll still need a cross-over cable.
A few examples, 
* raspberry pi v2 - 100base-tx
* HD Homerun Tuners - 100base-tx
So the 100base-tx world isn't gone completely.  I think r-pi v3 ( ~240 Mbps peak) and later, follow the GigE standards, but I haven't validated.  r-pi v3 claimed GigE, but the USB shared internals prevent actually pushing that amount of data. r-pi v4 CAN do GigE, I understand. I don't have one of those. Just can't figure out a valid use around here that the existing r-pis don't meet already.
