Last time I was anywhere near a strike was at home some 30 years ago.
It blew the pole mounted transformer apart.

The other times I was close but not within range. One was using some
radios when a storm moved through. I disconnected all the antennas
which were on towers on the roof of the building. The feed lines coming
in were arcing slightly from the atmospheric charge building up. I
could hear them crackling and snapping and, looking closely enough, you
could see the fine arcs going from the center conductor to the shield at
the coax terminal.

The other one was me taking pictures of lightning. I was standing under
a small overhang for a stairwell door and didn't notice I had been
standing about 5 feet from a lightning rod. :)
