I'd say there are "minutes" when LFS seems like a great idea, 
never an entire day, but we are each different. 

These days, I want
to avoid hassles for my servers and desktops. If it isn't rpm or .deb
based, then that is just too much hassle to me.  I did my time 
compiling packages, fighting with month-long bugs in certain distros,
and don't need that stuff ever again.

At this stage, if a big problem happens and I've spent 45 minutes 
attempting to fix it and failed, then it is time to wipe the system
and restore from a recent backup. Problem solved.  I'm thinking I 
should keep my LVM snapshots for 24 hrs, rather than deleting them 
immediately post-backup. That would make rolling back 1000x easier.
