[ale] UEFI vs BIOS understanding

Does gpt require efi?? I know efi doesn't use an mbr partition. But I think gpt can support either efi or mbr. For new hard drive and modern kernel , 3.1+, gpt is what I've used regardless of efi/mbr.
Note that fdisk on centos 7 still says it doesn't fully support gpt. Not sure what version it's using. I just use gdisk.
