[ale] What to do about non-cooperative SMARTD drive?

So, a Dell Optiplex 740 has a Samsung Spinpoint F3 disk (HD754JJ) which
has been working ok for several years. 

Over the last year, it has griped on startup about the SMARTD status,
and she has to poke F1 to boot. 

OK, this past week it gave us a scare, and so I leaped into action.
(ok, I strolled into action...) 

Trying to look at it with smartctl gives one pause...   It just doesn't
want to support much of the SMARTD protocol beyond name, rank and serial
number.    This is a fairly modern drive.   I've used smartctl on much
older drives and had it cooperate.   Been able to do short and long self
tests.  I'm getting no cooperation from this drive at all. 

I'm wondering if I should replace this while it's still running.   It's
running, and I must admit I didn't do the smartd checking when my wife
bought this a couple years ago.
