I know someone who is an offshore rated captain, who does ferry work,
and he has indicated that incompatibilities of onboard control systems
is not uncommon. 

The FAA is very strict about electronics in aircraft; you can't just
shove in a CD player/radio; it has to be TSO approved. 

However, maritime regulation is not so, and control systems on the
bridge sometimes lose contact with the engine room.    There have been
some spectacular docking accidents as a result, where the captain called
for "Idle", and the engine went "Full Ahead".
