[ale] custom kernel

The last time I compiled for any reason was last year while I was on
Slackware 13.37. I did not want to go to -current but I needed some of
the features in the 3.x kernel which was not slated for inclusion in
Slackware until 14.0. With "make menuconfig" the selection of options
and compilation is almost idiot-proof. It was just very time consuming
on the hardware I was using. Taking a solid couple of hours to complete
all the while praying my flaky power supply on the laptop wouldn't give
me any trouble.
