Reverse psychology. My father figured out telling me no was turned
into a challenge to do. While a teenager in the 60's I lost interest
in the "allowed" stuff and found ways of gaining access to the
forbidden. Such as beer. I had a mustache when 17 and looked like I
was in my mid 20's, and would go into an area of Boston that we called
the "Crossings" (pretty rough area and one took a gamble of getting
out of their alive if you weren't from the area) pay a visit to this
one package store and walk out with multiple cases of beer. Several
friends tried with no success the same place, they definitely looked
like kids. When my father finally said yes to alcohol in the house I
lost interest in it and moved on. looking back, he was able to get me
to do things that I normally wouldn't have done if he had required me
to do them. That worked for a while anyway.
