I would recommend buying an unlocked smartphone, then getting a pay as you go basic plan.
My daughter and son have used iphones and androids that way with no issues.
If you don't want to pay full price for the latest hardware, craigslist is your friend.
Galaxy Vibrants are going for around $100 and they are excellent android devices. Especially when running the latest Slimbean JB releases.

Does anyone know of a carrier that will sell an android smartphone
WITHOUT a data plan?
Meaning, it works like a phone to call and text, and when in WIFI
coverage, it will do the groovy smartphone things.
I've got three people here that are customers.
