[ale] OT: interview. Tie? Jacket?

As someone who has both interviewed ~50 people over the last 6 years, and been to a few interviews for myself, I'd say dress shirt or ironed business casual work shirt and a tie. No suit, but a blazer or sports coat is good, as long as it is in good taste.

In my experience, suits in an interview usually give a strong impression of non-technical, so if it's for a Jr. Law position, go with the suit. For a Linux Admin, go with the above.

Not to wear?

Shorts, flip flops, untucked shirts, or ties in direct opposite color or style to whatever else you're wearing. No jeans either, unless you've got beforehand knowledge indicating that jeans are expected in the interview.

Also don't lie on your resume.

I commented I'm glad as I rarely wear one since my company does not require such. He laughed and accepted that. Was the suit overkill? Yes. Did I show I was willing to go above and beyond? Yes. And 3 days later they asked for References. It was worth the short amount of discomfort to get on the short-list.

The only time I ever had an issue with appearance was when I was being presented for a job at a law firm that didn’t like beards. The headhunter was ready to send me on to the client but then realized I had the beard. I told her I’d be willing to shave if I got the job but not just in hopes of getting it. They chose not to send me to the client.

The idea of researching the company to find out their dress code sounds fine on the surface but I disagree with it. Just because the CEO or other key employees wear jeans doesn’t mean that they want YOU to wear jeans to the interview.

You want to show them you are willing to go the extra step beyond just your technical skill set. When you get up to leave, put the Jack on and straighten it. When you get back to the car, throw it in the back seat.

A nice pair of jeans can cost significantly more than a pair of khakis and for that reason you can be considered well dressed in jeans.
