Lately what seems to work well for me is dark slacks with a
sculptured "dress" T under a sportcoat - which I leave on. With my
Jimmy-Page-like hair, I seem to come off more appropriately
"professorial" looking and more "me" than I'd look in a suit.
When I just interviewed with the Suit, the VP I interviewed with
mentioned I looked good in it as he (and everyone else) was
wearing Jeans and a Polo. I commented I'm glad as I rarely wear
one since my company does not require such. He laughed and
accepted that. Was the suit overkill? Yes. Did I show I was
willing to go above and beyond? Yes. And 3 days later they asked
for References. It was worth the short amount of discomfort to get
on the short-list.

Regarding jeans for an interview: Only wear jeans if
you have dark jeans with a modern finish. These pale
stone/acid washed things that gray beards trends to
wear don't cut it for an interview. A nice pair of
jeans can cost significantly more than a pair of
khakis and for that reason you can be considered well
dressed in jeans.
