[ale] Sabayon

Arch Linux. Interesting. I will mount it in a vm. As for how I
choose Sabayon: I read about it (randomly, I think it was "an interview
with $NAME, the originator of Sabayon Linux"), I liked what I read,
researched it, installed it in a vm. Over the course of this weekend, I
installed it on my Debian box (replacing Debian).

First impressions: Impressive. Looks nice (running xfce4). Looks real
nice. Install was a breeze, though the file system creation had to be
run twice (running raid 10 using mdadm). Most installers crap out when
I try complex file system creation (mdadm, raid, LVM on top of that).
Package management is done with a binary package manager called Entropy.
First order of business was installing about 750 new updates. It is not
as fast as synaptic or aptitude. Perhaps about as fast as yum or yumex.
Finished without any hiccups. The folks on #sabayon freenode server
were very helpful and not one RTFM.

Now I have to start the long tedious process of using the box, finding
some app I need and finding out how to get it installed. First up will
be virt-manager and KVM packages.

If nothing else, it will keep me interested for a bit while I look at
Arch.

After following the thread for a while, to how it would unfold, I still
don't know why you picked Sabayon (I had never heard of it before this).

I was in the same position as you, once. I wouldn't run testing on my
desktop because freezes keep it broken for a long time, and I was tired
of keeping up with Sid. I switched to Arch Linux. Arch is the way to go
in my opinion. The package managent is relatively familiar to a Debian
user, but easier to build packages for and to use.

Hey gang,

Running Debian Sid for a desktop. Getting tired (after 10+ years) of
small breakages rotating through my desktop. Been thinking about
Sabayon. Not trying to start a religious war here (we all know Debian
is the one true Linux way), but does anybody have experience with this
distro?
