Habit(s) of old farts. I remember playing around and swapping
broadcast and network addresses of subnets around. It used to work.

Now, every expects everything to use the same assumptions, which is good 
in a lot of ways.

Oh and:

I typically add nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf

You are correct, modern syntax often adds them to interfaces
where that then gets stuffed into /etc/resolv.conf

Looks like it's time to go relearn everything with IPv6.
