from man interfaces, it shows:
  iface eth0-home inet static
             address 192.168.1.1
             netmask 255.255.255.0
             up flush-mail  ( what??)
and later down a few pages:
network network_address
                      Network address (dotted quad) required for 2.0.x 
kernels
I don't remember seeing examples where network is used..
mine looks like
# static setup
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.10.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
dns-nameservers  4.2.2.3 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 4.2.2.2 192.168.10.1
gateway 192.168.10.1
