I believe the OP wanted more than just "unpack".  The self-extracting
code provided in the other link lets you write an arbitrary
pre-install/post-install script that runs as part of the installation!
It's pretty sweet!  I've used that structure before and it's quite
powerful as a way to distribute programs.
