I got a Buffalo 1TB external USB last year. I completely ignored the
software it came with so no opinions on that aspect, but the drive has
fallen several times--off the dining table twice, the dresser once,
and the TV stand once--and it still reads and writes fine with no
funny noises. Oh, also automatic poweroff with connected computer
works well. My first item from Buffalo, but I'd buy from them again.
