I've never used Xen or anything except paravirtualizing Linux guests.
It does a terrific job at that, but the official Xen kernel is always
quite a few releases behind the mainline kernel.  If you want to run Xen
you'll want to make sure you pick a motherboard that is supported by the
older kernel.

I think you'll be surprised what you'll be able to fit on a machine like
you've priced out.  Of course, I have no idea what you're actually using
the machine for.
