I know that I'd sooner flip burgers than be doing nothing at all; the
few times that I have worked someplace and then been laid off and had to
draw unemployment while searching for anyplace to work, the unemployment
bugged me a great deal.  Granted, when working, you (well, your
employer) pays into it, and so collecting *some* of it is not horrible.
Still, I've never liked the idea of collecting unemployment when I can
be doing anything else.

If it came down to me having to work again, that's exactly what I'd do,
whether or not I enjoyed the job.  On the flip side of the coin, if I
have to work in an environment where shallow is a defining
characteristic of the hiring manager, I'd rather it be somewhere
flipping burgers---flipping bits is a technical job, and the people that
are involved in the processes of hiring and the like should understand
that.  If they don't, then I am going to dread working there,
particularly if the people around me, above me, below me, whereever,
don't have a competent grasp of what's going on.
