I teach an introduction to computing class to high school students. As
part of the class we do a system design from scratch. This involves
evaluation of current chipsets and processors to figure out what
combination of parts will provide the best performance for the least
amount of money, or the "sweet spot". We then order the parts and build
the system. We just finished this exercise and came up with the
following combination.
Asus P5KE-E/WIFI-AP motherboard $149.00
Intel Core2 Duo E8400 processor $189.00
Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5D memory $ 80.00
I assume you're not interested in the rest of the parts we picked. We
built the system and it runs very nicely.
