Maybe you were talking about me and stress testing a modem.  It was a
Zoom 3075.  Out of 1000 connects only 5 failed.  We did the test in a
hot environment because our cheap modems kept failing as the computers
heated up through normal use.  The cheap ones would get so bad that the
only connect speed possible was 1200bps and they were 56k modems.  This
little mistake set us back a bit and we learned from it.  We basically
wrote off over 1000 modems.  We still have them in our warehouse but
they are worthless.
