after my full install of SUSE 10.2, I ran the NVIDIA...9746...run and it 
worked this time.
now when I run beryl I get:
 # beryl
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
Relaunching beryl with __GL_YIELD="NOTHING"
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
beryl: No composite extension
