Thanks Jerry,
Where can I find a comprehensible :-) description of ppp dialup process, please ?
Gratefully,
Courtney

if you were able truly 'connect' & get online, then the remote modem pool is crowded. If the modem pool is hybrid in terms of supported rate (and/or noisy line), lower your rate to 38400 (28.8K modem) may 'broaden your horizon".
if you are not truly 'online' even for that brief few minutes, then the dial-up failed to get a 'CONNECT' string from the remote site, the time-out from the Expect-style expect. couldn't exactly recall the details now (last time I dialed were in Y2000), but PPP dial-up differs from a regular dial-up session, in that one should not expect a 'CONNECT'' string.
hope these remarks somehow helped :)

My modem dials and dials and dials [tryin' to connect] and finally

then, I'm connected for, at most, only a couple of minutes and the logs show
[after bein' dumped back off-line]:
.
.
Chat: Expect(40) : CONNECT
Chat: Expect timeout
Warning: Chat script failed
Phase: deflink: dial -> hangup
Phase: deflink: Disconnected!
.
.
I would send the entire log file but it's on the computer tryin' to dialup
and I'm typing
what hopefully is the essence of what's happening.
The pertaining lines, are:
set phone #########
set ifaddr 0 0
add 0 0 HISADDR
set authname ~~~~~~~~
set authkey #######
default:
set log Phase Chat IPCP tun command
set device /dev/cuaa1
set speed 15200
set dial "ABORT BUSY ABORT NO\\sCARRIER TIMEOUT 40 \
\"\" AT OK-AT-OK ATE1Q0 OK \\dATDT\\T TIMEOUT 40 CONNECT"
set timeout 180
disable ipv6cp
Appreciatively,
Courtney
