if you were able truly 'connect' & get online, then the remote modem pool is
crowded. If the modem pool is hybrid in terms of supported rate (and/or
noisy line), lower your rate to 38400 (28.8K modem) may 'broaden your
horizon".
if you are not truly 'online' even for that brief few minutes, then the
dial-up failed to get a 'CONNECT' string from the remote site, the time-out
from the Expect-style expect. couldn't exactly recall the details now (last
time I dialed were in Y2000), but PPP dial-up differs from a regular dial-up
session, in that one should not expect a 'CONNECT'' string.
