Would it not be more efficient to use sed only once and avoid the grep 
and awk?

ifconfig | sed -n "/inet /s/\
.*:\([^ ]*\)\
.*:\([^ ]*\)\
.*:\([^ ]*\)\
/\1\/\3\t\2/p"
