[ale] recovering usb thumb drive (was: OT:, but too geeky to be OT)

There is a company called Pivar that does things like data conversions
and disk recoveries.  I used them years ago to recover a Xenix disk and
every once in a while see questions like this.   Their number is
1-800-CONVERT.   Not sure if they deal with thumb drives but if nothing
else works you might give them a call.

If the chip is intact then it should be possible for someone to get a
magnifying glass, a low heat soldering iron (with a fine tip), some
small wire, and manually reconnect each contact point.
