Because sometimes you can mess things up (at least I can). Grub gives
you the capability to edit the boot options, mount a file system and
find the correct name of the kernel you are booting, etc. If you only
use lilo and you specified a bad boot config (i.e. left out initrd) then
you are hosed if A) you don't have a boot cdrom handy B) don't have a
cdrom drive C) don't have a boot floppy or a floppy drive.
