[ale] Upgrade hell

First thing I'd do is get a modern distro.  RH 7.2 is
4 years old now.  Even RH9 is out of service.  Try
SuSE, Debian, Mandrake, or Fedora...  any one of the
current distros would give you a world of better
results.
