[ale] Mandrake 10.0 configure and make errors - whaaa?

I was able to compile programs on it, specifcally a line editor my
friend wrote in ansi standard c++.......but I cant ./configure and
make/make install to install new software.
As for the rest, what would I check for for ld.so.conf or kernel
includes...what should I look for?
