Back up your scripts and any custom client specific installation data to
another drive and attempt the upgrade.  Another method might be to get a
second disk, install it on the host and use dd to make a backup of the
relevant partitions. . . then, if you're paranoid remove the disk from the
chassis, and perform the upgrade to 9.0 and see what breaks.  If you have a
backup machine, you could test the upgrade there to see what gotchas are
involved before doing it in production.

The generic advice is "Make sure you can back out of the upgrade if
necessary, and if not, make sure you can recover your data/setup if
necessary."  If you want to use a method other than those recommended above,
consider it an exercise for the reader.
