[ale] Debian help requested - vfat question

When installing Debian I included vfat to my kernel setup, but
yesterday I copied some files to floppy disk and noticed they were 8.3
format.  Was there a switch or something I should have used to enable
long file names?  It seems that any files that go to or from my
machine to a windows computer is converting all files to 8.3 format.

Can someone tell me how to fix this relatively easy?  I am planning on
using this setup on another computer and I don't want it to trunicate the
filenames.
