ok, here it goes:
case: CompUSA or otherwise $40.00
mobo: Anywhere $75.00
CPU: Anywhere $75.00
Power supply:Somwhere $40.00
floppy: Somwhere $20.00
CDROM: Somwhere $40.00
Video Card Somwhere $60.00
Hard Drive: Somwhere $100.00
Fans (2 x $10.00) $20.00
GRAND TOTAL: $470.00
Needless to say, everything is exaggerated. You *CAN* find stuff for less.
You can ebay and get stuff cheap. Dell Servers are going for $270 as
someone on this list has found out. As was quoted earlier go cheap. My
dataserver is a 600MHZ Celeron running Win 2K server and Oracle and
Suse/mysql/postgresql. No problem (though I am getting rid of the Win2k and
going to Oracle on Linux). Hardware is like software - the latest and
greatest is the most expensive. Look at Walmart's pc's running Lindows -
buy one of them and put Win98 on it. If you call Monarch and speak to a
salesman, they will help you coordinate it - but tell them you are looking
for bargain basement. I get NICs in a bargain bin for $2.00 since my dsl is
only 1/10 - 1/7 of an old nic. I shop at costco and best buy for HD (best
buy once had 100 GB HD for $60.00). It will take more work but is the way
to go if you have more time than money. Monarch also will assemble for
$25.00 and give you advice for free if you bought some stuff from them (I
like their cases, mobo's and CPU's - all bargain basement).
Good Luck
Greg
