I'm not sure about tracking how the reboot/shutdown was caused, but in 
the /var/log/messages file you'll find 'restart' whenever the machine 
boots.  Generally, just prior to that you'll find the shutdown process 
logged as well.  Unless it was a crash, then you'll likely see a panic 
or some other abrupt reason for the shutdown.
