[ale] xine/dma

I'm trying to get xine running. finally got it installed, but
playback is jerky.  Apparently I need to set dma=1 under hdparm and
it is now set as dma=0.  When I try to change it I get a kernel
messge saying permission denied. I'm doing this as root, running
the latest kernel under RedHat 8.0.
Any suggestions would be gladly accepted.
