I'm going to have to second the Dell vote.  A good Dell laptop with a 
docking station or two (one for the office if you can co-mingle), and 
you really can't go wrong.  With notebooks, I say go with the best 
processor/video combo above all else.  Ram can be upgraded, as can most 
of the other components.  DO NOT get a notebook without USB (as if you 
can these days).  USB is god.
