First, tell us what you see in /var/log/messages when you plug the drive 
in.  run "tail -f /var/log/messages" as root, then plug it in.  The 
messages you get should be a hint as to what is happening and maybe how to 
mount the device.  Post the messages and people can probably help figure 
it out.
