I am using XSANE to drive my HP ScanJet 3C. It is hooked to a stock
SCSI card. (originally came with an ISA bus proprietary SCSI card and
the new computer doesn't _have_ an ISA slot!). Windows identified
the SCSI card on initial boot, loaded the correct driver, but couldn't
identify the scanner -- too old. Once I told Windows what to look for,
it found the scanner, installed the correct driver, fixed things so
the scanner is reachable from graphics programs such as Photoshop.
With XSane, I still had to jump through hoops to get the scanner to
work, and I still have only a limited subset of features available.
I can't bitch too much, however, as HP doesn't even support this
model scanner any more -- it's too old! <grin>
