If you are not using hardware accelerated OpenGL, the performance will
vary according to the current system load and memory usage. If it's
slow, log out of X and back in and then run it. 

I have an NVidia Riva TNT2 card using the NVidia drivers. Tux Racer is
full screen and fast for me at 1280x1024x24.
