Salon Magazine has an excellent article on the licensing fees for the
new MPEG-4 standard for streaming audio and video. It does a great job
of explaining why people might--or might not--want to choose an open
standard like Ogg/Vorbis over MPEG-4. This battle has huge significance
for the future of open source. If it's a total loss, I think fewer and
fewer people will be willing to place a bet on open source. See the
