Hello James,
I used your .config as is, but again I run into the same problem.
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/root/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2
-fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe
-mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i686 -DEXPORT_SYMTAB -c

This is the same problem I have been facing since I started the
compilation. My processor is Intel PIII, 550M, RHL 7.2, Kernel
2.4.7-10smp on an i686.
[root at davinci linux]# gcc --version
2.96
[root at davinci linux]# rpm -q glibc
glibc-2.2.4-13
[root at davinci linux]# rpm -q gcc
gcc-2.96-98
I untarred the sources, did a make oldconfig, replaced the .config with
your .config. Then did make dep, bzImage. bzImage bombs...
Now what is _this_ problem ? With the same .config file (assuming some
option might be different), it compiles at your side and not at mine...
:-(

Falling in love is a lot like dying. You never get to do it enough to
become good at it.
