George:

If you haven't done this before, I *highly* recommend installing from CD's,
for several reasons:

1. It's easier,

2. No long download times

3. You'll have a *huge* selection of goodies available. Maybe you won't
use them all, but it's nice to be able to try stuff out, and choose the ones
you like best, without having to search the web or do hundred-megabyte
downloads. I often read about a new program which sounds useful, and start to
download it, only to find I already have it on a CD.

4. You can experiment with different setups (server, graphics workstation,
development box, etc). very easily.

5. When you need to reload or modify your installation, you'll still have the
CD's.

A few options are: Walmart (Mandrake 8.1 - $25.00)
http://www.cheapbytes.com (Just about any distro - Couple of bucks per CD)
Your favorite computer store. (You get books with this)
If you need it absolutely free, then I can send you a set I don't use:
Slack 4.0, RH 7.1, Debian 2.2 from cheapbytes, or older versions
such as SuSE 6.4 or Mandrake 7.1.

Regards,
Irv
