ok, my turn for a stupid question.

why can't these strings be made shorter?

i'm not a programmer (web or otherwise), but it seems that they could just
assign an index number using 0,1,2,,,,x,y,z and have more than enough
combinations to accomadate all of their listings with a 30 to 40 character 
string.
