[ale] dig works, ping doesn't ( was [ale] DNS lookups slooowwww.....)

One hint here, that Keith alluded to, 
is the fact that nslookup works, butping doesn't. Common problem for an 
improperly configured /etc/resolv.conf.Make sure that's setup
