[ale] New to the game

I have read about wvdial but I have not tried it:  I have not heard of ppl.
I know that there is a tool- the name  of whichI can not recall- that is
specific to the KDE desk top tool. I did not load KDE, I loaded Gnome.  I
keep after it. Thanks for your help
