There's a HOWTO on this in the LDP - assembly programming in Linux, I
mean. Drop me mail if you can't find it and I'll dig up a link.

All the tools are available in the GCC suite (assembler, linker,
debugger). If you're getting started, I suggest you use an 'Integrated
Development Environment' ("IDE") like Source-Navigator instead of a simple
text editor. Alternatively there is always 'vi'. (If you're familiar with
Emacs, it works well, but the learning curve is pretty @#$%!! stiff if
you're just starting out.) Source-Navigator is available through
[http://sources.redhat.com], and there are almost surely 'rpm'
installations available.

Go for it, but use good tools and you'll get further.
