Under IRIX there is a mediad daemon that does something like magicdev
but successfully.  I believe it polls the system as well.  Unfortunately
the only way to do something like this properly would be to have the
hardware tell a daemon that something has changed rather than having a
daemon constantly polling for changes.  Mediad has improved over the
years but still produces lag time on CD loading so a CD doesn't appear
immediately to the filesystem even though the CD has been available for
several seconds.
