[ale] Apache scaling on virtual directories

We have 1300+ classes here for this and last semester. We have a mailing
list (hypermail archived) for each class. The idea is that only students
in that class can get to that list archive.
I have been playing with the mod_auth_ora8 module for apache which lets
you authenticate a user against an oracle database. I have that working.
The problem is that it's either all or nothing the way it is right now -
we can authenticate the student is in a class and they get access to all
lists, or none at all.
What I was going to do is modify the script that creates the mailing lists
and /etc/aliases entries to also create a bunch of <Directory></Directory>
entries for apache's access.conf file.
Given the number of entries I was a bit worried if Apache would die a
horid death by doing this. Has anyone done something on this level
before?
